Cinegrafica Films & Publishing Inc. announces A Bond Forged in Whitewater, a new historical novel by British-Canadian director, screenwriter, and novelist Nicholas Kinsey.
Inspired by true events and drawn from the writings of W. F. Butler, the novel tells the story of an unlikely friendship between a British officer and an Ojibwe bowsman whose bond is forged across two challenging environments: the Winnipeg River in Canada and the Nile in Sudan.
Set against the backdrop of the 1884 Nile Expedition, A Bond Forged in Whitewater follows W. F. Butler and W. Prince as they join a contingent of Canadian voyageurs and boatmen recruited by Britain as part of an effort to rescue General Charles Gordon, who was besieged at Khartoum by forces of the Mahdi.
The mission takes the men through the Nile’s dangerous cataracts and the extreme conditions of the Sudanese desert. Against this historical setting, Kinsey explores themes of friendship, courage, survival, loyalty, and empire.
A Storytelling Career Across Film and Literature
Kinsey brings more than three decades of experience in film and television to his fiction. Over the course of his career, he has worked as a director, cameraman, editor, and scriptwriter, developing approximately twenty hours of dramatic screen content.
His experience in cinema has shaped his approach to fiction, particularly his emphasis on pacing, character development, visual storytelling, and narrative momentum. After initially adapting his own screenplays into prose, Kinsey increasingly turned his attention to historical fiction.

In Remembrance Man, Kinsey turned to the 1832 cholera epidemic in Canada, examining the social upheaval and human consequences of the outbreak. White Slaves: 15 Years a Barbary Slave further expanded his historical scope, while Kentucky Choirboy drew inspiration from Confederate raider Bennett H. Young and the St. Albans raid, incorporating themes of war, justice, and personal transformation.
